Il museo della canapa e del lavoro femminile

"Fremos, travai e tero"

Donne, lavoro e terra per ...

recuperare i segni di una cultura materiale particolarmente significativa in Valle Maira
valorizzare la produzione della canapa che, coltivata fino a pochi decenni fa, ha costituito una risorsa importante nell'economia montana
sottolineare il ruolo fondamentale della donna che si occupava di casa, campi, animali, spesso da sola perchè l'uomo emigrava in cerca di lavoro. E a lei era in gran parte affidato il ciclo della lavorazione della canapa, dalla semina alla battitura, dalla filatura alla confezione di preziosi capi.

L'esposizione di attrezzi e di manufatti, con la ricostruzione di ambienti che richiamano la vita di un tempo, offre al visitatore la testimonianza di una cultura ricca di ingegno ed operosità. Proporre la conoscenza dei suoi equilibri è fondamentale per costruire il futuro.
Tema dominante del museo è la canapa con l'illustrazione delle diverse fasi di lavorazione collocate nel contesto culturale e sociale.

Sarà possibile conoscere una parte significativa della storia della valle, penetrando nel vivo di una realtà umana, nei suoi rapporti interpersonali e nella sua capacità di interagire con il territorio:

seguendo un percorso didattico costituito da pannelli esplicativi
consultando un archivio con proiezioni di filmati, interviste e ricerche
fruendo di una sala multimediale

La riscoperta di antichi sentieri, la valorizzazione di "nais" e "batou", accanto a significativi esempi di architettura popolare, saranno espressione di tutti quegli elementi che hanno contribuito alla creazione di un paesaggio sapientemente modellato dall'uomo e conservato nella sua integra bellezza.

Il museo vuole essere uno spazio aperto a:

un continuo interscambio con altre attività culturali e lavorative.
Si propone come punto di riferimento per:

la conoscenza del passato
l'elaborazione di nuove idee
l'attivzione di produzioni che valorizzano, nel futuro, competenze artigianali e rispetto dell'ambiente.

The hemp museum and women’s work

“Fremos, travai e terro”
Women, work and the land

Research into women, their work and the land has led to:
• the recovery of a range of cultural artefacts of particular significance in the Valle Maira.
• our appreciation of the importance given to hemp, and its cultivation until a few decades ago, constituting as it did, an important resource for the economy of the mountainous area.
• bringing to the forefront the fundamental role of women who had to tend to the home, the fields, the livestock, often on their own as men emigrated in search of work. The responsibility of the production cycle of hemp fell, for the most part, to the women, from the sowing to the threshing and from the spinning to the sewing of invaluable garments.

The tools and handmade implements exhibited, along with the recreation of the lifestyle setting of the time, allow the visitor to experience a culture rich in resourceful ingenuity and industry.
Hemp, seen at the different stages of its production in a cultural and social setting, is the dominant theme of the museum exhibition.
You will gain a deeper understanding of the valley and the story of its people as you venture into the heart of their daily lives, their relationships and their ability to work in harmony with the mountainous terrain.

You will have the opportunity …
• to walk around the exhibition and read the explanatory notices
• to consult our archives consisting of film footage, interviews and research
• to enjoy making use of the multimedia room.

The rediscovery of ancient mountain tracks, of the “nais” (round pools used for soaking the hemp) and the “batou”(a kind of mill designed to break the hemp so that it could be carded and then spun), next to significant examples of popular architecture reflect all the elements which have helped create a landscape so intelligently shaped by man and yet retaining its integral beauty.

The museum aims to be an open space for:
• exhibitions
• gatherings
• work and cultural activities

It sets out to be a point of reference for:
• understanding the past
• promoting new ideas
• launching creations which highlight the skill of the artisan and with it respect for the environment
